Toilets to be installed on the Malecón in Puerto Plata

Frank Cabrera, the assistant secretary for tourism in Puerto Plata, has announced that over the next few days several groups of toilets will be installed between the beach shops/restaurants/bars along the town's coast road.
Caseta at the Malecón
Caseta at the Malecón
This means that each group of two cassetas (beach shop or restaurant) has one toilet available for its customers. The operators of these new shops and restaurants have been complaining for months now about the lack of toilet facilities.
Hopefully solutions will also be found for the shop owners' other grievances. They claim that the rent is too high and that the electricity bills are excessive each month. They used to run small booths along the Malecón where they sold hamburgers or beer, and where they could tap into the electricity supply at the nearest telegraph pole. This meant that they never used to pay either rent or electricity bills.

Counterfeit 200 and 500-peso notes in Sosúa

According to 'El Nueva Norte' various counterfeit 200 and 500-peso notes have been found in colmados (small neighbourhood supermarkets), book stores, petrol stations and at taxi companies. The reporter for El Nueva Norte, Milton Camacho, asked the companies where these counterfeit notes came from, and was told that they originated from the driver of a black jeepeta car. The man uses these bills to purchase food, drink, cigarettes or petrol. Shop owners are having a difficult time lately as it is, with food and petrol prices rising constantly, and now they also have to suffer further losses from counterfeit money. The local police, as well as shopkeepers and taxi drivers, are on the lookout for a dark-coloured jeepeta.

Club X opened its doors

On Friday evening, 17 October, the entirely renovated disco Club X, reopened its door in Sosúa. The disco is located opposite the Merengue Club. The opening night was turned into a spectacular affair by a sensational performance by the well-known merengue group Omega. A lorry was parked in front of the doors and was used as a basis for a light show. Huge lamps sent the light high into the sky like laser canons. But this also highlighted the fact that this was a very different evening. Entrance charge at the cash desk was 700 pesos.
Omega

Inside, a beer cost 100 pesos. The opening night was spectacular, because Omega is a very very good merengue group and their show is top class. But it remains to be seen whether or not this new disco is really offering something new for Sosúa. We already have four large discos in the town, although Seacrets is currently closed because there are not enough clients. Club X is not competitive when it comes to price or music, because last Saturday evening they were playing just as much techno and house music as the other discos. Many residents in Sosúa had doped that the new Club X would be a disco where they could enjoy real Dominican music, with lots of bachata, merengue, tipico and salsa music. Why do we need yet another disco with music that you can also hear in Berlin, Amsterdam, Toronto and New York?
But we also hoped that the prices would be Dominican. Bar (colmado) El Flow proves that you can earn a good turnover with low prices and thus make a profit. But the hope of low prices also seems a waste of time as far as Club X is concerned.

Is Sosúa beach open in the evenings?

According to the Spanish-language webblog 'Sosúa online' the committee of the beach-vendors association (la Asociación de Vendedores de Figuras Artesanales en la playa Sosúa), via spokesperson Andrés Batista, has announced that the beach will now be open during the evenings. The chairman, who also owns a restaurant near the entrance from Charamicos, says that the beach now has sufficient lighting and that the tourist police agents (Politur) will guarantee the safety of tourists.
Your Sosúa-News journalist spoke to various owners of beach bars, and many were not enthusiastic about the plan. The power is often cut off between 7-10pm, which means that the beach seems darker, which might make tourists feel less safe. There is often no water for flushing the toilets and the washing up cannot be done.

Previous attempts to keep the beach open during the evenings have shown that there are not enough tourists visiting the beach to make these longer opening times worthwhile.

Day of the Races

Columbus 'discovered' America on 12 October 1492. People now think that these were the Bahamas, or San Salvador, or Samana, or... but that's not so important. They are certain that the Indian population of the Caribbean islands almost completely disappeared in 100 years due to battles, infections and diseases brought to the islands by the Spanish, such as yellow fever, influenza, mumps and measles. The Indians were not very suitable as slave labour for the sugar cane plantations, so black slaves were imported from Africa to do this kind of work. The Spanish soon mixed with the Indian populations and with their black slaves. This led to as new type of race in the Dominican Republic. They now say: 'We are not Spanish, not Indian or African, but we are Dominican (Dominicano Soy)!'
So, these days, on the day that Columbus discovered America, it's no longer a celebration of the discoverer - the Spanish caused too much cruelty for this. Now 12 October is celebrated as the day the Dominican people were created - the Day of the Races (Día de la Raza).

New National Police chief in Sosúa

The National Police corps in Sosúa now has a new commander - Major Mario Guzmán, who has taken over from the (now transferred) Colonel López.
Majoor Mario Guzmán

During his first meeting with the local press, the new police chief stated that he would operate within the criteria given by the law, and with respect for all citizens. 'We will work with determination and focus, and will perform our tasks justly. We will therefore gain the trust of the public', he declared. He also hoped that the residents will support his crime-fighting efforts to stamp out the increasing use of drugs around Sosúa.

Pedro Clisante to become boulevard

Pedro Clisante to become boulevard
Pedro Clisante to become boulevard
The section of the Pedro Clisante, from the taxi rank to opposite the Merengue Bar, is currently undergoing renovation, with trees being uprooted, pavement stones and rubbish being cleared etc. According to a spokesperson for the people working there, this mud-bath and illegal rubbish dump is being transformed into a nice boulevard, where tourists can spend time during the daytime and evening. The work should be completed by the end of October.

'El Flow': a bar with style

Two months a new bar/colmado (small supermarket) opened its door in Sosúa's main street (Pedro Clisante). The bar is located directly next door to Fat Herman's bar and cigar store. Now it's nothing new for a bar to open in the Pedro Clisante or, more often, to close down. But the interesting thing about this bar is that the Presidente beer only costs 50 pesos (for a small bottle) and 80 pesos (large bottle).
El Flow
El Flow
El Flow
El Flow
Not only that, but the music is real Dominican - plenty of merengue and bachata numbers, with the odd reggaeton song thrown in for good measure, which is lot better to listen to than the standard disco beat played in other disco's and bars. So its not surprising that the bar is always packed out with people who enjoy the night life in the town, but only want to pay a reasonable price for their beer and enjoy the Dominican atmosphere.
El Flow - a welcome addition to Sosúa.
From Sosua News
SMT
Yes its the end of low season, however the strip is still very busy every afternoon and evening. Lots of new faces and yes its still wild every night. Some people prefer the low season because you dont have to line up for any of the night spots.

Some changes in town are as follows:

The main street Pedro Clisante is one way now ....away from the Beach and the new Casino and runs as far as the Super Super liquor store. This is only enforced up until the Amet Police finish work, which is, at latest 9pm. Then it goes back to both ways.

For you motorcyclists, wear a helmet during the day anywhere in town. Amet will usually let the Dominicans get away with it because they have no money. You do and they will get you. They may even take your bike to ensure that you pay. Bin there , done that.

If you have a sport muffler, keep it quiet around Amet.

New Garden  bigger and better, plus more expensive. $65.00 per night.

Lots happening in town. New construction, new businesses and more buildings are being painted up.
The Bar Central is popular because the prices for a beer are 20 pesos less. Merengue is at 100 pesos downstairs now. Classico also at 100 per beer. El Flow sells beer for just 50 pesos. Vey busy. Mostly Domincans.

US exchange still around 33 to 34.40 for 1 dollar . Stable.

Police Sting Cataches Thirty Mugger Hookers

In a sweep led by Captain Pedro Clara de la Cruz, the Tourism Police (POLITUR) arrested thirty women accused of prostitution and harassing tourists in Sosua.
The women, originally from various parts of the Dominican Republic and Haiti were arrested after complaints from hoteliers, businessmen and tourists in Sosua.
According to some of the complaints, the women were engaged in prostitution, but also drugged their clients so they could steal their wallets, cameras, jewelry and other valuables.
This latest “clean-up” action from POLITUR comes just after the recent replacement of the National police in Sosua as reported by the Adscene two weeks ago.
Residents we spoke to in Sosua are hopeful that police are now serious about reducing crime and corruption in the area.

Sosúa boasts another new disco

The casino being built alongside Hotel Sosúa Bay is finally reaching the completion stage.
After One Discotec
After One Discotec
But it's more than just a casino - there will be conference and meeting facilities, as well as apartments. A new disco has been set up on the ground floor and is now fully furnished. This disco is called 'After One' - which is a good choice because it will be an addition to the current dance venues such as Merengue Bar, SeaCret's and the Latino Bar. When these discos have to close at 1:30 (weekdays) and 2:30 (weekends) then you can now move on to the After One, which will stay open until the early hours of the morning.

Chandeliers

The disco has been beautifully furnished, with a small bar to the left of the entrance, which leads to the first dance floor. An long oval bar has also been set up in the middle of the room, then there's a second dance floor with a large bar at the end. There are seats to the left of the room, which provide a good overview of the dance floor. Everything has been fitted out using luxurious materials. The lighting gives a good atmosphere, with sidelights and chandeliers. The disco can certainly compete with luxury dance venues in Europe or the USA.
Sosúa can now boast of yet another excellent disco, where people can enjoy themselves even if it's after 1am (After One).

Drinking tonight? Then don't drive!

Motorists who are caught drinking and driving can expect to pay a considerable fine, or even be put in jail. The Ministry of Police and Interior has issued a decree stating that motorists will now be checked to see if they have been drinking. Even taking alcohol in your car is forbidden, unless you are transporting unopened bottles or cans of drink.
Dominican Today reports that the AMET (traffic police) has now been issued with 1000 breathalysers.
You have been warned!
